Painting a Mandala on my Wall

This is a video I created showing the process of painting a large mandala mural on the wall of my apartment!

I already had this beautiful turquoise colour on my wall so I just used silver acrylic paint for the mandala.

Before I started painting, I created a template using string, a thumb tack, and white pencil crayon which easily wiped away with a damp cloth after the paint was dry.

Some of you have asked me to explain the process of creating the template so I will attempt to describe this below.

You will need:

  • 1 thumb tack
  • string or yarn
  • pencil or pencil crayon
  • ruler

Steps:

  1. Place the thumb tack where you want the center of your mandala to be.
  2. Measure out a piece of string from the thumb tack to where you want the largest circle of your mandala to be (this will be the final size of your mandala).
  3. Cut the string and tie one end to the thumb tack, and tie the other end to the pencil crayon.
  4. Keeping the string taught, draw a circle all the way around, with the thumb tack in the center.
  5. Cut off the pencil end of the string by a few inches.
  6. Re-tie the pencil to the new end and draw another circle inside the first.
  7. Repeat the process until you get close to the thumb tack and cannot draw any more circles.
  8. Remove the tack, then use a ruler to draw lines across and diagonally from the middle.

You can use my Mandala Drawing Template as a guide for how your final template should look. Let me know if you need any more clarification!

It took me about 8 hours to complete this painting.

Check out the video and let me know what you think in the comments below! Would you do this to your wall?

Cheers,

Julie

Watercolour Paintings

watercolor watercolour pug feathers drawing sketchbook

I have been using my new watercolour set quite a bit over the past few weeks and thought I would share some of my paintings with you guys!

I started off with a few tutorials to get my artistic juices flowing, such as this watercolour feather tutorial which I used for the feathers in the image above.

I have already been using some of these paintings for my finished designs, like the diamond below you may recognize from my Watercolour Diamond Pattern that I shared last week.

I followed this tutorial in order to create these beautiful (and easy) watercolour gemstones!  I also referenced this step-by-step tutorial in order to draw the diamond shape correctly.

Here I was working on my calligraphy and lettering skills by painting out some words that I can mix and match in various ways (sexy pizza pie anyone?).

Here is a close up of the pug face I painted!  I think it turned out pretty good.

This slice of pizza is going to come in handy for some cute new designs (and is making me hungry).

Make sure you follow my blog so you can find out how I will use these in my upcoming designs!

I hope you have enjoyed seeing my sketchbook watercolour paintings, and a bit of the preliminary process of creating my finished designs.  Let me know what you think!!

Have a great week everyone.

Hand Painted Bird Feeder

This is my latest project, since I am sprucing up my patio for Summer – A hand-painted bird feeder!

And the best part is that I just used a plain wooden one from the dollar store!  So cute and cheap!

I haven’t actually gotten any birds to eat from it yet but I just put it out yesterday so hopefully they will come soon.

Tangled Hands and Other Art Projects

overlapping hands drawing doodle art design colorful

I’m into the last month of school so things are getting crazy busy for me!

While I have a few minutes I wanted to share some of the best artworks I have made so far this term.  This one above is titled “Tangled Hands” aka “Healing Hands” in which I was dealing with the idea of trauma and the healing effects art can have. It is pretty large sized, like 24×36 inches so it took me forever!

I used a combination of watercolour and Sharpie pen to create this piece.

Below is an acrylic painting inspired by the historical painter Guiseppe Archimboldo.  It is called “Wine and Cheese”.  I know it’s a little funny looking, but look up Archimboldo’s works they are amazing.

Lastly I’ve added some psychedelic Op-Art I drew in my sketchbook using pencil crayons.

In other news, someone has asked to feature my recent Butterfly Zentangle piece in their online Art Zine!  It comes out in a month or two so I will definitely be sharing the link to that.

In other goods news, my boyfriend is taking me to Ibiza this summer!  Sooo exited!  I have only been to Europe one other time and I loved it so I know it’s going to be amazing.

Anyways I hope to share many more things I’ve made with you all soon, probably more once the school year is all finished.
